City of Wolverhampton’s plans to develop a National Brownfield Institute (NBI) have been handed a major boost. The scheme is to receive £14.9 million of funding from the Government’s Get Building Fund for the West Midlands which is aimed at projects that can be started quickly and completed within 18 months, create jobs and generate investment to aid the economic recovery from Covid-19. Plans to transform a former Wolverhampton youth club into a welcoming community hub and church have been announced. Windmill Community Church, a registered charity, is developing the proposals to restore the club on Henwood Road in Compton. The City of Wolverhampton Council owned building has been empty since September 2019 and the church has approached the council with its plans. Windmill Community Church has previously raised funds and transformed the St Thomas Church building in Finchfield into a vibrant community venue. There has been a sharp rise in coronavirus cases in Sandwell in recent weeks. This has be partly driven by outbreaks in workplaces. Lisa McNally, Sandwell Council’s director for public health, said: “We need businesses to let us know if they have two or more cases of COVID-19 among their workforce. A factory at the centre of a major coronavirus outbreak in Sandwell has taken the decision to voluntarily close from tonight after over a third of the workforce tested positive for COVID-19. CBS Packaging, of Brandon Way, West Bromwich, has closed for 14 days to support infection control measures decided among the outbreak control team, which includes the company, Sandwell Council, Public Health England (PHE) Midlands, Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and Walsall Council. Wolverhampton’s first Young Poet Laureate has been officially appointed – and is set to perform some of her work at the city’s annual Literature Festival on Saturday 1 February. The City of Wolverhampton Council’s Library Service and Boomwriter launched the hunt for a Young Poet Laureate in the autumn, and encouraged children and young people aged between 7 and 18 to submit a poem of any style based around the title of My City, My Future. Fairtrade Fortnight is the annual campaigning fortnight of the Fairtrade Foundation which this year runs from 24 February to 8 March.
