Residents and community groups have given the thumbs-up to a pilot scheme at Thimblemill Library which uses new technology to allow them to access the library at times outside of normal opening hours. Library+ works with existing security and CCTV systems and people sign-up to be able to have access using their library card and a PIN number. People have to sign up to an additional agreement and have an induction. Being accessible for longer and being able to offer a range of facilities during extended hours will help ensure the library remains an integral part of the local community.…

Members of West Midland’s Sikh community celebrated Vaisakhi with the Mayor of West Midlands Andy Street. The event, which was held at NatWest’s offices in Birmingham, marked the annual spring harvest celebrations celebrated by Sikhs. Mayor Street was joined by Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji, Chairman of the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha and other local dignitaries for the festivities. A portrait of Birmingham’s first and only female leader was unveiled to celebrate her outstanding contribution to civic life at a memorial service earlier today (1 June 2022). Alderman Theresa Stewart, who served Birmingham City Council as councillor for over 30 years as well Leader (1993-99) and Lord Mayor (2000-01), died on 11 November 2020, aged 90. Leicester colleagues from the UK’s community bank, Metro Bank have raised £986.89 for Cancer Research UK. The University of Wolverhampton has secured almost £10,000 funding to create awareness of organ donation across four major faith groups across the West Midlands. The University’s School of Art and the Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies has secured the funding to continue raising awareness amongst the Sikh, Hindu, Jain and Buddhist communities across the region. A West Midlands healthcare Trust has revealed how it is playing its part in helping the NHS to cut one million tonnes of C02 emissions. Sandwell and West Birmingham (SWB) NHS Trust has introduced a number of initiatives to tackle climate change – including installing more than 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging sockets in its car parks and solar panel roofing at two sites.
